Eligibility Criteria

  • First, all international students and global researchers can apply. Nationals of Germany and Brazil cannot apply.
  • Next, postdoctoral researchers must have completed a PhD/doctoral degree within the last 4 years. This ensures they qualify for the fellowship.
  • Additionally, experienced researchers must have completed their PhD degree or equivalent academic qualification within the last 12 years. They must also have an established academic and research profile.
  • Furthermore, applicants must be fluent in English language. Knowing German language or basic German skills gives an added advantage for research in Germany.
  • In addition, applicants must not have lived in Germany for more than six months within the last 18 months. This ensures fresh research eligibility for the Humboldt Fellowship.
  • Finally, applicants who already received sponsorship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation cannot apply. This maintains the program’s fairness and diversity.

 

Financial Benefits

  • First, the Humboldt fellowship provides all postdoctoral researchers with a fully funded fellowship. They also receive a monthly stipend of €2,670 to cover living and research expenses. 
  • Next, experienced researchers, who are well advanced in their careers, receive a fellowship amount of €3,170 per month. 
  • Similarly, the fellowship covers mobility allowances and travel expenses. This support allows researchers to focus fully on their projects in Germany. 
  • In addition, the program provides medical and health insurance. Fellows also receive personal support throughout their stay. 
  • Furthermore, the fellowship offers language courses for both the researchers and their partners. This helps them integrate into the German research environment. 
  • Moreover, the program provides a family stipend for accompanying family members who stay for at least three months. 
  • Besides this, fellows receive an allowance for a research stay at another European institute, which broadens their academic and professional opportunities. 
  • Additionally, fellows can choose any academic host institution in Germany. This ensures flexibility and alignment with their research goals. 
  • Finally, the fellowship gives researchers the opportunity to become part of the largest alumni network. They can connect with global peers and leading experts in their field.
