Research Training Program (RTP)

Category

Masters & PhD

Details

The Research Training Program (RTP) is a pool of funding provided by the Australian Government to support domestic and international students undertaking Research Doctorate and Research Masters degrees. The program is administered by individual Australian universities on behalf of the Department of Education. The RTP replaced previous schemes like the International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) and the Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA). Support is available for a maximum of two years for a Research Masters and up to four years for a Research Doctorate. Because the program is managed locally by universities, students must apply directly to the participating higher education provider of their choice. Each university has its own application process and specific deadlines.

Eligibility Criteria

Must be a domestic student or an overseas student as defined in the Higher Education Support Act 2003
Must be enrolled in an accredited Higher Degree by Research (HDR) course at a participating Australian higher education provider (HEP)
Must meet the specific admission and selection requirements of the individual university where the study is being undertaken
Must not be receiving an equivalent award or scholarship from the Commonwealth designed to offset HDR fees
Specific eligibility and merit-based selection processes are determined by each individual university's RTP scholarship policy

Financial Benefits

RTP Fees Offset: Covers the tuition fees that would otherwise be payable by the student to the university
RTP Stipend: A living allowance provided to assist students with their daily costs while undertaking their research degree
RTP Allowances: Funding to assist with ancillary costs of a research degree, including relocation costs to undertake the HDR, thesis printing and academic publication costs, and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for international recipients and their dependents
